Vilakazi Street Life

ABOUT US

1947onvilakazistreet was founded in 2021 by Naomi Lele Ratsheko, with the name honouring the birth year of both her parents.
Located on the iconic Vilakazi Street in Soweto, Johannesburg, it stands proudly on one of the most historic and culturally rich streets in the world, the only street to have housed two Nobel Peace Prize laureates, Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Nestled along this legendary street, 1947onvilakazistreet offers a delightful blend of daytime relaxation and evening sophistication. Step into our majestic cellar and embark on a sensory journey, where we explore your palate and recommend the perfect bottle for any occasion, beautifully complemented by a curated dish from our kitchen.

Our guided wine tastings and Chef’s Table experiences offer moments of effervescent elegance, enhanced by unobstructed views of surrounding tourist attractions and captivating Soweto sunsets. Every sip becomes a story, every visit a memorable adventure.

Our beverage selection reflects a thoughtful balance of old-world charm and modern sophistication, showcasing winemakers’ and distillers’ mastery in crafting exceptional varietals. Each bottle embodies a harmonious relationship between terroir, wine, and spirits, celebrating elegance, finesse, and the vibrant spirit of Soweto.

The Culinary Experience at 1947onvilakazistreet, we invite you to embark on a distinctive culinary journey that perfectly blends sophistication with the rich, soulful essence of Soweto. As the chef, my vision is to elevate the dining scene in this historic street, striving for greatness in every dish while remaining deeply rooted in the flavors that resonate with our community.
Our menu is proudly bistro-inspired, offering a diverse array of selections designed to cater to every palate. From perfectly cooked steaks that speak of quality and precision, to comforting and flavourful pasta dishes, and vibrant, fresh salads, there’s something for everyone. What truly sets us apart, however, is our dedication to showcasing traditional South African foods. We believe in honoring the culinary heritage of Soweto, presenting beloved local dishes with the same care and attention to detail as our international offerings. Imagine savoring a tender oxtail stew, cooked with a depth of flavor that tells a story, or enjoying perfectly prepared mogodu, all within a setting that feels both upscale and intimately familiar.
We are unwavering in our commitment to utilizing only the best quality and freshest ingredients. This philosophy is at the heart of everything we do, ensuring that each plate served at 1947onvilakazistreet is a testament to our passion for exceptional food.
